EUCN European Union Studies Graduate Weekend School
EUCN Weekend School 2010

The EUCN’s forth Post-graduate weekend School was hosted by the University of Canterbury at their Kaikoura Field Station, two and a half hours north of Christchurch. This picturesque location was the perfect setting for two intensive days of workshops and student presentations. The weekend was attended by 18 postgraduate students from around the country.
Students attended a seminar by Dr. Alberto Montagnoli, a visiting lecturer to the National Centre for Research on Europe, on “The European Unemployment Gap and the Role of Monetary Policy”, before heading up to Kaikoura. Saturday was a fully packed programme, with interactive workshops on dealing with the academic environment, publishing, collaborative research, presentations by students of their research topics and a hotly contested Euro-quiz which tested students knowledge of topics ranging from EU policy to sport and Euro-vision. On Sunday students worked on developing viable collaborative research projects before another workshop, this time focusing on grant application writing. After a busy weekend there was still time for some wildlife watching at the seal nursery just north of Kaikoura before heading back to Christchurch.
Students were enthusiastic about the fact that the weekend offered them the possibility to broaden their horizons of where their research could take them in the future and what the next steps were for their research (beyond just assessment).
The next EUCN Weekend School will be held in either April or May 2011 and will be advertised on this website.
