EUCN Internships

Applications for EUCN MEP Internships for the academic year 2011 are now closed

MEP Internships

Since 2003, the National Centre for Research on Europe, in conjunction with Members of the European Parliament's Delegation responsible for relations with Australia and New Zealand, has coordinated a programme allowing New Zealanders to work as interns for a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). This internship programme is now being organised by the New Zealand European Union Centres Network and in 2011 two postgraduate students from EUCN Partner Universities will be selected to work as interns at the European Parliament.

This programme forms part of the EUCN's wider objective to increase New Zealanders' awareness and understanding of the European Union. The internships are designed to provide post-graduates with an opportunity to experience working for an MEP as well as to assist their own research.

To be eligible for the internship you must be a post-graduate student registered at a EUCN Partner University for study in 2011 at Masters or Doctoral level and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

These internships will be for 3 months and expect to take place from September 2011. Exact timing will be negotiated with the New Zealand Embassy in Brussels. Interns will be asked to work on a variety of projects including but not exclusively: helping to prepare documents, undertaking small research papers, helping with administrative tasks, and helping to arrange events.

The Internship provides €5,000 to support you during your internship period. This can cover airfares to Brussels, accommodation, local transport and daily living costs. All expenditure must be in line with University of Canterbury and EUCN grant rules.

Applicants will need to be able to work full time while undertaking the internship. Therefore, students are eligible if they have recently completed studies focused on the EU or are enrolled for a relevant course of study in 2010/11.

Interns will be required to produce a detailed report at the end of their internship and give a short presentation at their home university on their experiences. Interns will also be asked to contribute to the EUCN blog on the work they are undertaking.

EUCN Domestic Internships

Applications are now closed for 2010, the next round of EUCN internships are expected in early 2011.

The EUCN is pleased to announce a new opportunity for students studying the EU in New Zealand at the post-graduate level (Honours, Masters or Doctoral). We are seeking applicants for national EUCN Internships.

These internships will be for 3 months and will be undertaken with key actors in EU-New Zealand relations within New Zealand (for example the Delegation of the European Union, New Zealand Europe Business Council or various Member State agencies).

Interns will be asked to work on a variety of projects including but not exclusively: helping to prepare documents, undertaking small research papers, helping with administrative tasks, and helping to arrange events.

Students who need to travel to another location in order to take up their internship may be awarded an accommodation grant of approximately $200 per week to help cover living costs, and if necessary, a small travel grant ($100) is also available. (Total grant of up to $2500NZD)

Applicants will need to be able to work full time while undertaking the internship. Therefore, students are eligible if they have recently completed studies focused on the EU or are enrolled for a relevant course of study in 2009/10.

Timing for internships will be worked out in negotiations between successful candidates and the EUCN; however, due to the schedules of the host organisations this may require an amount of flexibility. Internships must be undertaken between the 1st of June 2010 and the 31st May 2011.

All interns will be required to produce a report at the end of their internship and give a short presentation at their home university on their experiences. Interns will also be asked to contribute to the EUCN blog on the work they are undertaking and on EU-NZ issues.
