EUCN Academic Research Funding and Mobility Opportunities
Under a new grant from the DG RELEX the EUCN is pleased to announce a new set of funding activities aimed at promoting research on the European Union and enhancing collaboration with centres of EU expertise in Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
There are three separate initiatives open to academics researching the European Union who are from EUCN Partner Universities in New Zealand. All applications must be submitted online by 5pm on Wednesday 12th May.

EUCN Comparative Regional Integration Project (CRIP)
This activity aims to maximise inter-partner cooperation and multidisciplinary research. The larger research project is open to participation by researchers from any EU Centres globally, but funding is limited to academics from EUCN Partner Universities.
There are two interrelated themes for this project which proposals should address:
Drivers of Regional Integration – What forces or circumstances have driven integration. For example:
- the nature of issues on which integration efforts are based (e.g. economic vs. security issues)
- the character of parties undertaking integration (e.g., integration among high- or low-income societies or societies at different income levels)
- ‘exogenous’ conditions such as economic crisis, security threats (e.g., WMD proliferation, terrorism, criminality, pandemic, energy supplies), or changing conceptual consensus (e.g. climate change)?
- ‘endogenous’ conditions such as dominant visions of integration processes in various regions in general (and the EU in particular) and the perceptions, lessons, models and references these processes present for other parties wishing to undertake regional integration
Regions and the Global System – How do regions and the ‘international’ order interact, including:
- how do regions interact with each other?
- how do regions interact with state actors inside and outside of regional institutions?
- do regional institutions complement or compete with ‘global’ institutions like the WTO, IMF/World Bank and UN?
Funding
The available funding pool in each round is €4200 and each application may request up to a maximum of NZ$5000.
Funding is intended as ‘seed money’ to help initiate or extend projects rather than fully fund a complete research project. Funding can be used to support the following to:
- Conduct Research Fieldwork (for example travel to undertake interviews or access data and sources not readily accessible at your home university)
- Present at relevant conferences* combined with research fieldwork
- Hire research assistants and/or transcription for interviews
- Hold a small research symposium to collaborate on research outputs
- Facilitate travel between partners within the project (both within New Zealand and overseas)
Awards cannot be used to replace or supplement academic salaries.
*Please note that travel to attend a conference only is not eligible for funding under this scheme. Travel to present at conferences will only be considered when combined with research fieldwork.
All expenditure for successful projects will need to take place between the 1st June 2010 and the 31st May 2011. All expenditure must be undertaken in association with EUCN rules and appropriate receipts and paperwork will need to be kept and submitted for reimbursement.
Decisions on applications are expected by the beginning of June and applicants will be notified by email.
Eligibility
Eligible proposals will:
- address at least one of the themes listed above
- involve two or more EUCN partner institutions
- preferably consist of a multidisciplinary project team
- preferably include researchers and institutions outside the EUCN and New Zealand (own funding)
- preferably include researchers from other EU Centres around the world (own funding)
Proposals must be submitted by a project leader who is a current academic at an EUCN Partner University.
All proposals will be submitted via the online form (website) by 5pm on Wednesday 12th May 2010.
Expectations
Funded research projects are expected to produce tangible research outputs including scholarly publications, conferences, reports and research symposia.
It will be a funding requirement to present your research at either the EUCN annual conference or by a national seminar (videoconference). Funded academics will also be asked to contribute outputs for inclusion on a CRIP project webpage which will be linked to the EUCN website.

Staff Research Awards for Pilot Projects
The aim of these grants is to provide seed funding to establish research projects on new EU-NZ research areas, allow academics to access key research resources and undertake fieldwork on EU related research topics.
Funding
The available funding pool in this round is €9775 and each application may request up to a maximum of NZ$5000.
Funding is intended as ‘seed money’ to help initiate or extend projects rather than fully fund a complete research project. Funding can be used to support the following:
- Research Fieldwork (for example travel to undertake interviews or access data and sources not readily accessible at your home university)
- Present at relevant conferences* combined with research fieldwork.
- Hiring of research assistants and/or transcription for interviews

Academic Staff Exchanges with the EU
This activity is designed to enable a small number of staff from EUCN Partner Universities to undertake a short term exchange with a university in an EU Member State. These exchanges are intended to help develop research networks and collaborative projects, share best practice on research and teaching, develop co-teaching and supervision opportunities and undertake research fieldwork. Exchanges should be for the minimum of one week at one EU Member State university (you may visit more than one institution).
Funding
In this round there is a funding pool of €11,000. The maximum you can apply for is NZ$6,000.
Funding can be used to cover:
- travel to Europe
- travel within Europe to reach your exchange institution(s)
- accommodation costs
Awards cannot be used to replace or supplement academic salaries.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a staff exchange grant you must
- be an academic at one of the EUCN Partner Universities
- have a specific institution and contact person for the exchange listed on your application
- be able to demonstrate how this exchange will benefit your research of an EU relevant topic.
It is possible to apply for funding for an academic from Europe to come to New Zealand on exchange but priority will be given to providing New Zealand academics with mobility to Europe.
Expectations
It is expected that this exchange will further your research and help you to establish and broaden your research and teaching networks. All successful applicants will be required to complete a one page evaluation report on returning from their exchange. It is expected that wherever possible research outputs resulting from an exchange will be disseminated to EUCN Partners.
