EUCN Postgraduate Scholarships and Research Awards
The New Zealand European Union Centres Network invites applications for their scholarship round for the 2011 Academic year. Scholarships are open to post-graduate students at one of the EUCN Partner Universities and whose study focuses on the European Union.
The deadline for applications is 5:00pm on Friday 22nd October 2010
There are two different types of EUCN Scholarships available:
- Course Fees Scholarships of up to NZ$5,000 used to cover tuition fees charged at an EUC Network Partner University for the course of study being undertaken by the student; and,
- Research Awards of up to NZ$2,000 will be awarded for direct research costs associated with the course of study being undertaken by the student.
A list of previous recipients can be found here.
Students are welcome to apply for both a Course Fee Scholarship and a Research Award but only one category will be funded for each student.
The Course Fees Scholarship covers tuition fees for the EU studies related courses undertaken by the student. Unfortunately we cannot cover other enrolment fees such as student association and health levies.
Honours students are eligible to apply for Course Fee Scholarships and Research Awards for taught courses and/or research projects that relate directly to European Union studies.
Students are not eligible for this award if they are a European Union citizen and do not possess permanent residence in New Zealand.

Student Exchanges with the EU
Applications for the Student Exchange Scholarships are now closed.
This activity is designed to enable a number of post graduate students from EUCN Partner Universities to undertake a short term exchange with a university in an EU Member State. These exchanges are intended to help develop your research by accessing specific expertise or resources available at an EU University. Exchanges are for a minimum of two weeks at one institution (you may visit more than one institution).
Funding
In this round there is a funding pool of €9,000. The maximum you can apply for is €2,500.
Funding can be used to cover:
- travel to Europe
- travel within Europe to reach your exchange institution(s)
- accommodation costs
All expenditure for successful projects will need to take place between the 1st June 2010 and the 31st May 2011. All expenditure must be undertaken in association with EUCN rules and appropriate receipts and paperwork will need to be kept and submitted for reimbursement.
Decisions on applications are expected by the beginning of June and applicants will be notified by email.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a student exchange grant you must:
- be a postgraduate student at one of the EUCN Partner Universities (enrolled in 2010 in a Hons, MA or PhD programme)
- be undertaking a research project on an EU related topic
- identify a specific institution and European supervisor for the exchange listed in your application
Expectations
It is expected that this exchange will further your research and help you to establish and broaden your research networks. Ideally candidates will be able to present their current research at a conference or seminar in Europe while on their exchange. All successful applicants will be required to complete a one page evaluation report on returning from their exchange. It is expected that wherever possible research outputs resulting from an exchange will be disseminated to EUCN Partners. Students may also be asked to contribute to the EUCN Blog during their exchange.
